College and Writing Books

Well. NaNoWriMo came and went. Second year winning. Two for two right now. Go me, I guess.
Things have been pretty crazy around here. I just finished Bitter Blood by Rachel Caine, and by golly, the book was amazing. So many feels, you don't even know.

Anyways. A couple weeks ago I found out I got accepted to Northern Michigan University, and I'll be headed down there in the fall. It'll be the first time I'll have gone back to the states in seven years. *Seriously, January 10th, 2006 is the day we flew in to Germany* I'm mentally prepping myself for major culture shock.

I've planned more of my novel, Lost, which I got up to 50681 typed words. The rest of it's in my notebook, waiting to be put in to document form in Microsoft Word. *sigh* I thought I had more.

Twenty-four Is A Magical Number

Here it comes, guys, the Writers Call of Duty. The days are counting down until the second *or third if you count Aprils Script Frenzy* National Novel Writing Month event of the year. You have allowed yourself a weeks break since the event in June, and now it's time to get ready for August.
Here's a checklist of things I'm going to be looking out for and doing to prepare myself in the next 24 days.

1. Get an idea. You're a writer, you have a million tiny ideas flying around in your brain, but most of them are just that - ideas. Choose the one that you think you can bring the most out of. For example, I had a dream where all I can remember was a silver pocket-watch. I've taken that pocket-watch and turned it in to the center point of a novel about Time Travel. If all else fails, go out and people watch. Relax. Breathe. Study.
2. Become Dr. Frankenstein. Yes, it sounds weird, but honestly, characters are fun to make. Not only are they vital to your story, but they can be anyone that you want them to be. Grab the parts - Red hair because you love Rupert Grint. Aussie accent because Ryan Kwanten is Hottie McHotterton of Hotsville. Curly hair, because you're tired of your own straight hair. A musician, a storm-chaser, a trapeze artist, because you hold the pen, and you want to live vicariously through them. Pull the lever and bring them to life! (And then think of a name.)
**For help in finding names for your characters, may I suggest the websites I use?
www.babynamegenie.com
www.seventhsanctum.com
www.babynames.com
www.behindthename.com
3.  Plan an outline. -Grooooan- Do I have to? Believe me, I hated writing outlines. I'm the first person to admit that I'd prefer to Wing about 80% of any given novel. I'll think of a few giant plot points, some big ones, and a few minor ones. We all know that even though we're the writer, that we hold the Almighty Pen, our characters can take charge and lead us down an entirely different road. Keeping on track is a great way avoid wanting to pull your hair out during those 30 days.
4. Tell people you're writing a novel. Just don't tell them every tiny detail about your novel. It's annoying, seriously. If you give too much away, what's the point in reading it if you're going to tell me the entire plot? Telling people that you're writing a novel in thirty dreadful days is a good way to keep yourself from backing out. They'll be envious of you, astounded that you're going to attempt such a blasphemous thing. And now that you told them, you'll have support. If you fail and quit early for whatever reason, you'll have to deal with a wee bit o' self shame for a while.
5. Follow @CampNaNoWriMo. But Lisa, not all of us are Twitter Junkies. Trust me, I know this. I'm not even a twitter junkie, but believe me when I say, CampNaNoWriMo on twitter gives good advice, support, and ...what's the word i'm looking for...encouragement, there we go.
6. Join NaNoWriMore on Facebook. I've been in the group since around the time it was founded, and let me tell you, that page is probably the main reason I've been able to build an amazing story. The people are amazing, unique, and always there to convince you to carry on with your novel. For example, I had 40k words to write in 5 days, and they told me I could do it. And by golly, I almost said to heck with the fact that I have to sleep, I'll do it! I'm telling you, these people are amazing. You may have to be invited, but you might be able to send a request to join... http://www.facebook.com/groups/144867258950480/
7. Have A Playlist. Music works wonders, that's all i'm going to say. I mean, seriously. The right song at the right place at the right moment could make you think of you're entire novel in like two seconds.
8. Write that sh*t down. As writers, we're probably the biggest self-liars in the world. After coming up with the greatest idea in the world, we tell ourselves, 'oh, it's alright. I don't need to write this down, I'll remember it.' WRONG!! You'll forget it, and you'll want to punch yourself in the face a few times as you pick your brain trying to remember.
That's pretty much all I've got for now. I'll post more tips until the day the August NaNoWriMo ends. If you want, scope out a few locations, find a place where you can get lost in your work and write, or think, or whatever. You have to write where you're most comfortable. Remember, one mustn't edit during the event. Fine tune it now while you've got the chance. Be the OCD perfectionist you never knew you were. Also, reading your inner Editor a bedtime story might be a good idea. You'll have to shove them in to a steel pit during your time in this.

Good luck with the set up. And don't worry (too much), you've got 24 more days until things get real.
~Lisa

Writing: An Interpretation.

Anyone can write. Everyone should try it, even if they never plan to publish it. Writing is like being in charge of your own personal insane asylum. You decide what happens, how it happens, and when it happens. Writing is the easiest thing to do. It’s also the hardest. It’s as simple as simply expanding your most recent dream, the one you can barely remember, and turning it in to a short story, or a novel.
You can’t just write something. It’s not that easy. But at the same time it is. You have to have the idea, even if it’s the smallest thing, such as a silver pocket watch. The idea of that pocket watch leads you to come up with the greatest idea of a story about the creation of time travel – which is nothing but paradox and contradictions. Every writer is a terrible writer. The first draft is what just spills from your fingertips. The second draft – that dreaded first revision – is what your brain tears to shreds. In this, you wonder how you ever dreamed of releasing that monstrosity to the world.
Writers are constantly working. They’re never ‘off the clock.’ When we zone out and tap our pens, pencils, or fingers against a surface, we’re creating an entirely different world. It’s not just something you can control. Like that pocket watch, the gears of your brain are just ticking on and on in to infinity, until one day, it stops. We writers don’t see it as the moon simply shining. We see it at all these angles, how the moonlight is being reflected off of a piece of broken glass on the mildew drizzled lawn, how the moon casts a dull white blanket over everything in its path. Writing is one of the simplest complexities that we’ve been challenged with. Writing lets you be what reality denies you.
And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt. --Sylvia Plath

The above is a rough draft of the speech thing I'm giving in my AVID class on Thursday. We're supposed to speak about something that's important to us, and I just knew that this is the one that would make most sense for me to talk about.

I'm on Wattpad!

After much persistence of my fellow Lunch-table-mates, I've created an account on wattpad. I won't post any full stories there, unless i make one specifically for wattpad. I will, however, be posting little tidbits there. Extras, if you will.

Clicking here will guide you to my profile. I've uploaded one thing so far: something that was supposed to be an AP assignment that I seriously feel like it was BS'd beyond control and half-assed. Apparently, though, my teacher thought it brilliant.

Something I've Never Told Anyone

If it weren't for rediscovering something I've written a while ago, I probably never would have brought it up.
As some of you know, I'm what they consider an Army Brat, though I loathe that term with a burning fiery passion, for reasons I can not to discuss. My dad served for 26 years, and he's seen a lot of shit. We've been around the block a few times. I have no idea what it's like to live in one town for your entire life, to have friends for your entire life, to have a reputation that sticks with you, wherever you go. I'm used to being the new kid, to knowing that the inevitable is that your best friends will move to anywhere from Fort Hood, Texas to Okinawa Japan. Those who live in a military setting know that a tour generally lasts two to three years, but can vary incredibly. It's a rinse and repeat cycle. Nothing stays the same, but at the same time, absolutely nothing is changing. Same procedure, just a few new faces.
I don't know what it's like to live in a world where people don't know what MP means, (for those of you who don't, it means Military Police) and a while ago, I didn't even consider to think that that was the case, not until I had to explain to someone what it meant. I've moved so many times, I've left the country, the continent even. A lot of people don't even leave their state, or hell, even town.
A few years ago, sometime during my fifth grade year, my dad had gotten orders to deploy to Iraq. The news... I didn't really know all too much about the war back then, I didn't really understand why he had to go, but I just knew he wasn't the only one. There were times where about 75% of the kids in class would raise their hand when our teachers asked if our parents were down range. I remember when he left. It was my first day of middle school, and normally, he would have gotten into the car and driven us to school. Us, being my older sister Michelle, and me. At the time, she was in eighth grade, so she had a clearer sense of what was going on. That morning, though, he didn't have the time to do that before he had to go. The best he could do was go with us to the bus stop and wait with us for the bus.
When I was little, in second grade or so, and we lived in Fort Benning, my dad used to walk with me to the bus stop, and he'd stand there and we'd wave at each other until the bus had gotten too far away. It seemed so normal. Happy. That was how I had to say good-bye to my dad. We had to go to school that day, while my dad went with his company to leave for war.
I remember, I was sitting in the seat behind my sister, and I could see Michelle's reflection in the dusty glass of the bus's window. She was crying, not heavily, but enough for it to be obvious. And I felt ashamed, because I couldn't bring myself to cry. Whenever I think about that - which is a lot, lately - I try to tell myself it's because I knew he wasn't going to get hurt, that nothing bad was going to happen. And for a while, that was the case. For a long while, actually, nothing bad happened to him. Granted, we rarely had the chance to talk to him. We got the occasional package from him with things like beanie babies and games. All sorts of things, and with each passing day, with every package we got, it was one step closer for him coming home.
April 17th. For some reason, that week, no matter the year, had always been slightly negative. April 17th was the day my dad enlisted, when he was fresh out of high school. Sometime during that week, I had gotten an infection on a badly done earring - first customer with the new lady, whee! - and when my mom took it out, I passed out, falling backwards and hitting my head on the floor, nearly breaking my toe in the process. Also in that week, or sometime before then, my dad got hurt.
He was sitting in a tank when another one collided, and the cannon part of it broke through the window behind he was sitting by and seriously jacked up his shoulder. I'll never forget the pictures of the damage it caused. Thankfully, nothing else happened to him, physically, at least. He still has nightmares, almost six years later. Those he'll never get rid of.
In a way, I'm glad for my lack of knowledge on the war of Iraq at the time. I've learned so much since then, and I'm constantly thankful for my dad being safe now. It was a hard year. He missed a lot. My sister finished middle school that year, and he wasn't there to see it. I started middle school and I wish he could have been there for the awards ceremonies, hell, even for dinner after we all got home.
I'm proud to say, though, that nearly two years ago, my dad retired from the military. And we've been here in Germany for just over six years (January 10th). By the time I graduate next year, I will have gone to seven different schools. Not including my kindergarten.
-Three elementary schools.
-One middle school *a surprising feat when you lead my life*
-Three high schools
It's been a long, strange trip, but now I'm getting the chance to settle down in one place. This is the longest I've ever lived in one country at a time. Granted, my family has moved while on this tour, but we're still in the same city. I'm beginning to shed the feeling of My life is going wonderfully, when will I be forced to move again? It's liberating.
I'd like to end this post with this: I'm all kinds of thankful for everything our soldiers had to go through, and still have to do, and for everything they're fighting for, but I would never wish this life on anyone. There are too many risks, so much sadness. And this is coming from someone who isn't even old enough to vote, or hell, even legally drive in this country.

I had to get that off of my chest. Every once in a while, my walls come down, and I need a little therapy session. This was one of those times.

Welp, since i'm already here.

Might as well post a bit more than just a picture.
But first off, this post mainly exists so that Kod can see this picture, because, well, twitter apparently hates him.
So. Here you go. i found this on tumblr. it made my night.

Now, about my writings.
I've gotten a decent amount done tonight, to make up for what i'm going to shun while i'm taking my exams.
Haven't done any sprints lately, perhaps during second semester i'll be able to. -sigh-

Restless

Oh, goodness guys.
i'm so bored, so beyond restless. I've got nothing to do, when i could be doing everything. I don't have the patience for anything. I can feel it in my bones, that i can't just sit here and do nothing, but none of my friends are online.
I need real life friends, ones that live in my country. And this is one of those times, where writing won't suffice. It will probably end with me forcing myself to sleep before i end up punching a hole through my computer screen.
ACK.

Also, we're hitting semester finals during the next two weeks. x.x /sad face.

Three Cheers for a New Year.

Ohhai,

If you're reading this. You're awesome, automatically and straight up awesome. If you're not... then you're just not. So. Since this is the first post of the new year, I want it to be something kinda snazzy, so, I will tell you why it took me six days to post anything so far. Then, I will post an excerpt from my NaNo Novel.

First off; my not-so-lame-lame-excuse

On January the 3rd, at 12:15 p.m., I had an appointment at the dentists downtown from where I live to get all four of my wisdom teeth pulled out. I was aware of the entire thing, as they did not give me what i call the "Loopy Meds". For me, one of the worst things was the shots in the very beginning, as my cheek made this very disgusting noise once getting impaled with needles. I hate needles. I hate sharp things in or around the vicinity of my face. So, this was murder, in it's own way. Whenever things got intense, i had both my hands in my TOBUSCUS hoodie, one on my stress ball that i got when my dad was in Iraq, and one on my iPod's volume. When things got bad, i turned up the sound of my music - Secondhand Serenade - and squeezed the hell out of that ball.
The whole thing took about 45 minutes, and if it weren't for the noise, i totally would have fallen asleep, because i thought it a genius idea to stay up late that night. And by late, and night, i mean until 5 in the morning, and waking up at 9:30. I was raiding, with my guild. -cough-
So, then. Let me just tell you this. The shots they gave me, the first one alone numbed up like half my face, including half of my tongue. Which was odd, being able to feel only part of my tongue for a good five minutes, until they came back to give me four more shots, which i couldn't feel. When I got home, I could not for the life of me feel my face. It took. Six. Hours. to get complete feeling back in my chin and tongue. It was terrible. And before that, i was in so much pain that i had to take this medicine stuff that made me pass out for two of those six hours.
So, the day goes on into the next, and waking up was the worst experience in my life. Gravity does not, i repeat, gravity DOES NOT like the morning after the removal of wisdom teeth. I literally did not have any shred of desire to sit up and get out of bed - i tried, three times. When i finally did, i was called into a Skype Call with two of my very good friends. This is how the first few words of my morning were spent.
Friend 1: Good morning!
Me: -muffled, slurred, and just bleh- g'mornin
Friend 1: You sound so downtrodden!
Me: shuddap, it hurts.

Friend 2 was laughing.

Anywhore. So the pain kept going and going, and that's how the last two days were spent. Today, i was being a nerd, and i raided and such some more. Just because i felt like it. So that's the majority of how i spent my last week. Between playing WoW and LoL, I've done a bit of napping, dying of pain, trolling tumblr, and a tad bit of writing.

and now. For the excerpt i promised earlier. Just need one moment to look for it.

He paused to make sure she had gotten all of the information so far. When she nodded, he continued. “We’re going to assume that since we’re dealing with demons, we know that they cannot penetrate holy ground, unlike the vampires and wolves. So we’re looking at some other massive building, perhaps a storage unit or a hospital. Something where they can store a lot of people, because we’re pretty certain they’ll be holding hostages for their experiments. If you need to start mixing an arsenal of poison, after I’ve filled you in would be the time to do it. We’re expecting hordes of beasts to be there, and we cannot underestimate any of them. Doing so, as Natja says, would be your dying mistake.
If we fail to recover Connie – and this is hoping she’s still alive and relatively normal when we find her – we’re going to blow the place sky high. Leave no prisoners; destroy everything they’ve worked for. After that, any one of us that remains alive and kicking are going to go back to Thirty-Six and tell them about everything. What we do after that is no longer up to any one, unless a siege is coming onto our home. If not, and you’re dead, I’m just going to go crawl into a hole and acquaint my temple with Mr. Happy-Bullet.”
“That,” Jac said slowly, swallowing hard. “Sounds intense. Let’s hope it doesn’t end that way, shall we?”
With a curt nod, he stood up and came to where she sat in her bunk, leaning his arms on the edge of her bed. “Got everything in your head, comrade? We’ve got to be able to trust each other.”
“Roger that,” she said, straightening up. “I’m going to go heed your advice and starting brewing some chemical concoctions in the armory. Unless you want to die from the fumes, I suggest all of you stay out until I say the coast is clear and the fume vent has done its job.”
Shoving him to the side with a playful push, Jac hopped down from her bed and made her way to the armory, closing the door behind her. Above the door frame, a red light turned on and the door sealed itself shut.
Going into the kitchen, Jess looked for something to drink. Finding some powdery stuff that one was to put in a cup of water, he tested it out. Reading the label of the package, he shrugged at its unfamiliarity. The water turned orange the second he poured the powder into it. Grabbing a plastic spoon, Jess stirred it carelessly as his attention wandered. Leaving the drink on the counter, he opened the fridge and grabbed some sliced meat, cheese, onions, and ranch. After searching the various counters for some bread, Jess proceeded in making a sandwich he used to love as a child. After putting all the used ingredients away, Jess took his meal and glass into the common area.
As he sat down in one of the cushioned seats, he made himself relax and think of nothing but the sandwich that lay in front of him on the paper towel. Staring wistfully at it for a second to see how long he could resist eating it, he shook it off and took the delicious thing between his eager hands. As if it were a slow motion film shoot, he bit into the sandwich, his eyes closing as the familiar taste teased his taste buds.
When he opened his eyes again, after having swallowed it, he found Annelise sitting across from him, smirking.
You look as if you’re thinking naughty thoughts about a sandwich. She signed to him, folding her hands before him.
Maybe I am. You’ll never find out, and you’ll be left wondering forever if the guy you met on the bus to hell was falling in love with a sandwich.
What sounded like a chuckle came from the back of her throat. You’re a pig.
“Not a pig, Stitches, just a man.”
I wouldn’t go that far – I mean really, isn’t the word ‘man’ a bit of a stretch?
Narrowing his eyes, he smiled, “Up yours, Stitches.”

Jess is one of my favorite characters to write. He's snarky.
Anyways. That's that, and I hope you kinda enjoyed it.
Signing out for the moment,
-Lisa

Happy Hafly Belated Holidays!

Well, folks.
Christmas has come and gone.
We've opened our presents and visited the in-laws.
And now, we're just waiting for new years to come around to see which of us are the "Cool Kids" and which of us will be falling asleep before the Ball drops.
I've been writing again, it feels nice. Wrote over 1k words today, which is virtually nothing, but hey, it's gotta count for something. Oh well.
One of my New Years resolution: Post more for my blog ._.

What are your goals?
Also, if you're a person who loves to write, and has facebook, request an invitation to the group WriMore International!
That stands for Write More International, where someone is on at all hours, waiting to sprint, giving out mini challenges, and over all, giving advice for fellow authors. Come join us, we're non elitists. And the majority of us don't bite.

Saturday, 17 December 2011

Well then.

So, I know it's been ages since i posted.
So much for once a day, eh? That lasted about a week.

Here's a run down on my first ever NaNoWriMo Experience.
The first few days before it, I was becoming petrified. I was nervous beyond anything.
But I found that I did in fact, have this. So i wrote and i wrote. After about the second week, i fell behind and had trouble catching up, even though i was doing all kinds of word sprints.
Over thanksgiving weekend, i ended up writing an average of about 5k words per day and was able to finish early. I hit the 50k word mark on November 26th at around 8:30 pm. My 50,000th word was lips.
I'd have to extend a giant thanks to all my sprinting buddies, and everyone in the NaNoWriMo page on facebook - all 24,900 of you. - for keeping me going with stories and mini-competitions.
It was fun, and i seriously recommend you all do it.
If you're a year round writer, feel free to join this page. It's called "WriMore International" and the people are just brilliant. I post from time to time, and plenty of us are still going on with our NaNo projects, as well as other things.
Feel free to join us. We don't bite.

well. Most of us don't.

i'll keep posting here. don't worry.

Oof

Ohhai guys.
i swear i didn't forget about you.
i just. was writing. and catching up with school work and what not.
How's your guys' novels going?
i just broke 22k words, and like. i found that Word Sprints are very effective. If you find yourself lacking, COMPETE IN THOSE!
Yes, compete. not participate.

Another Day In Paradise

I think i took a wrong exit. Today was so far from Paradise it's not even funny. Woke up at 5:10. Left the house at 6:30. Took a wee little road trip to Bamberg Germany to take my SAT.

Where someone thought my name was Lindsey. This is someone i have History with. ._.
Well, it's a step up from that time in Spanish class in my freshman year. They called me Sarah for months. Atleast this chick got the first two letters right.

Took my SAT. was incredibly bored during it.
Went home at about 1 pm. Got home around 2.
Way behind on my word count.
Killed a spider.
Ripped holes in my wall.
Am dying of Bronchitis.
Not really, it just sucks alot.

A Penny For Your Thoughts?

I'm sick and i'm stressed. I've got my first ever SAT tomorrow morning in a place that's an hour away, and i'm not even sure of WHERE the freaking testing site is. I'm behind on my word count for today, even though i've passed tomorrow's mark.
I don't want to sit in a crowded room for four hours tomorrow morning at 8. I can hardly breathe, my throat is killing me, and my coughing makes me sound like an old man.
I want to sleep, so so badly. But if i sleep now, i won't wake up till the middle of the night, where i'll be exhausted by the time i leave for my test.
Someone spare me?

Thursday, 3 November 2011

2126 words later.

That's how much i've written today, and it's only 2:14. I want to hit 8k words total by the end of the day, so only about 700 more words are needed. I've totally got this.

I've got a doctors appointment later on today since i missed the entire week of school. Le sigh.
SATs this weekend. Kinda nervous. Kinda very nervous.

So far, i'm holding up though. Had my first writer's block of this novel yesterday. I was stumped for like, four hours before my sister and best friend were able to help drag me out of it.

NaNo Day Two Summary

Oye. To carry on with what i was talking about earlier, my Writer's Block seriously beat the crap out of me today..

i pulled through though, and wrote a butt-ton more from my last post. And if i weren't so tired, and if my eyes werent losing focus every ten minutes, i'd write 300 or so more words so that i can hit an even 3k words today. But, i'm fine with what i've got.
How're your novels going so far? Any advice?

i'm out for the night - i'll welcome you with another post tomorrow morning. Add me if you'd like!

Day two and i'm stumped.

Phew. This sucks. I've written less than 700 words today. I'm stumped - the introduction is just like. Ugh, do i have to? i just have to write a bit of bitter dialogue until some exciting stuff can begin happening.  OH. They meet Annelise soon! YUS.

thank you, Sara, for your - POOKIE. ARE YOU SERIOUS? My cat's had like. the worst gas all day, and he's asleep on the floor behind me. jeebus.
Anyways - thanks for your desire to have your character be a creepy/epic silent type. *Le hug*

i'll check in a little later.

Day One; Successsssss!

ohhai again.

I stayed home today, because i'm still sick. No idea if i'm going or not tomorrow... i know that i should, but yeah. no idea.
my word count was kinda. Meh. at first today. at 8 in the morning i only had two paragraphs, but then i was like. WHOA. IDEA. so i started writing, and when i checked again *i write in OneNote, so i have to copy and paste into word* i was at 2,387 when all I needed for the 50k goal is 1667 a day. I'm gonna shoot for atleast that much a day, and whatever's left is brilliant. Makes me book even longer, and if need be, can make up for days i missed.
i've got SATs this weekend, and i'm hoping my sick goes away by then...
How'd your first day go? Or, depending on where you live, how's it going now? I'm still gonna write some more, but I have to do some chemistry. Le Sigh.

It's Hereeee.

Well, hello again folks.
This is it; day nu- ew. nosespray just hit the back of my throat. and i just discovered i have a bloody nose. -le sigh- anyways. Day number one is upon us. Normally, i'd be going to school in half an hour, where i'd sit through the following -thrilling- classes.
AP English and Composition - i have an exam today.
Seminar - SSR (in which i'd write) and then during the time after SSR, i'd go to my computer animations and make up a test from yesterday that i missed cuz i was sick.
AVID - I have a debate today, about either the movie "Twelve Angry Men" or something my teacher found online.
Algebra 2 - the only class i'm stumped about missing. Mr Jordan's going to have to email me the lesson.
instead, i'm going to stay home, because both my mom and my sister are thinking i'm possibly on the verge of having mono, although, lemme tell you, i've only kissed one guy my entire life, and he moved almost two years ago.
While i'm staying home, though, i'll be writing. As much as possible, maybe i'll get tomorrow's word count in as well.

Writing Quote of the Day:

I just write what I wanted to write. I write what amuses me. It's totally for myself.
